Rita Giovannoni
June 11, 1951 - September 14, 2025
Our beloved Rita M. Giovannoni, age 74, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025. Rita was a revered leader in the Dane County senior care community, known for her deep compassion and innovative spirit. Her contributions will never be forgotten, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her.
Born on June 11, 1951, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Rita was the daughter of the late Eugene B. Giovannoniand Edith V. (Pellicori) Giovannoni. After her high school education at St. Joseph High School and bachelor's degree from the UW-Parkside, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a master's program, where she would eventually make her home and live for the rest of her adult life.
Rita’s professional career began at UW Hospital as a Respiratory Therapist, a role in which she showcased her commitment to patient care. She later transitioned into leadership roles, culminating in becoming the CEO of Independent Living, Inc., where she dedicated over 33 years of service. She held multiple civic and board positions in the community. Her passion for leadership, coupled with her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of others, made her a trailblazer in the senior care field.
Outside of her professional accomplishments, Rita was an incredibly thoughtful and well-read individual. Her love of history, literature, and poetry shaped her worldview, and she shared that passion with those around her. Rita traveled extensively with her beloved husband, Kevin, experiencing the magnificent art, architecture, and culture of Europe and the U.S. She had impeccable taste, not only in the art she adored but also in her home decor, which reflected her refined sensibilities.
Music was another of Rita's great passions. She found joy in both opera and R&B, each genre offering her a different way to connect to the world. Gardening in the spring and preparing delicious meals were also outlets for her creativity. Her culinary masterpieces were second to none and every baked good had the perfect crumb.
Rita is survived by her husband, Kevin Bartrom; her brother, James Giovannoni (Teri); and her half-sister, Tina Giovannoni, as well as numerous cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews who brought her so much joy. She cherished watching them grow and felt immense pride in their accomplishments.
As Rita embarks on her next great adventure, her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever remain with us.
Rita and her family deeply appreciate the compassionate care provided by the Carbone Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Agrace Hospice Care, and all those who cared her, allowing her to remain at home during her final days.
The Memorial Service will be Friday September 26, 2025, at 11am at Ryan Funeral Home 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, WI 53704. There will be a visitation at 10:30 am prior to the Memorial.
