Eighteen-year old Diann L. Halker, 7910 42nd Ave., died at St. Mary's Hospital in Racine at 5:30 a.m., April 21, 1966, of injuries received in an accident on Hwy. 32, south of Racine, Tuesday morning. Miss Halker suffered internal and head injuries when her car collided with an auto driven by another Kenoshan, James W. Carpenter, 19, 319 59th Place, on the foggy stretch of highway about 7 a.m. Tuesday. Rescue workers had to cut away the steering wheel to free the girl who was pinned in the wreckage of her auto. She had been listed in "critical" condition following four hours of surgery Tuesday. A plea for blood for the injured girl was responded to by more the 50 friends and relatives from Kenosha, co-workers at the Wisconsin Telephone Co., and strangers. She was given 23 transfusions in the unsuccessful attempt to save her life. Miss Halker attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph High School last June as an honor student; she was attending UW-K as a part-time evening student. She worked as a service representative for the telephone company in Racine. While in high school she was a member of the National Honor Society, French Club, Student Council and Sigma Jae. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). The above information was obtained from a front page article in the Kenosha News dated April 21, 1966.
