I went to St. Peter Catholic School with Hedwiga (Hedy) Milass, who was a year ahead of me in classes.  In the 1950's, St. Peter's was a small Lithuanian Catholic parish, serving all the Lithuanian Catholics in Kenosha.

Our Parish school was composed of four classrooms, 1st and 2nd grade, 3rd and 4th grade, 5th & 6th grade and 7th & 8th grade. All the kids at St. Peter's went to public school for kindergarten.  There was never more than 110 kids in the parish school at one time.  By having two classes per room, we all basically attended every class year twice.  The dedicated nuns would take turns teaching one of the grades aloud, while the other grade did class writing assignments.  My graduating class was composed of 5 boys and 8 girls.

As I recall it, Hedy had several of her siblings and relatives at St. Peter's.  I remember her as being fluent in Lithanian, which she spoke the majority of our Parishioners, and that she was a good polka and Lithuanian folk dancer, wearing the tradional folk costumes at the parish festivals that were held often in the parish hall above our school..  We all had a wonderful childhood at that old St. Peter's, back in the 1950's.

A long time ago.

What a beautiful and thoughtful memorial letter.   She was always kind, sweet and accepting of all her classmates.  I admired her.  Thank you for writing it.   Orlyn Faraca Reese '62

I have such fond memories of Heddy from chemistry class with Sister Phyllis.  Heddy was smart, kind of quiet and had a beautiful smile.
