Doug was born October 2, 1947 to William C. and Elizabeth L. (nee Martin) Schmitz. He attended St. James Catholic Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1965. Upon graduation he attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. Doug married on June 21, 1969 while stationed at Eglin, AFB, FL and divorced approximately four years later. He had no children. After twenty-three years of service Doug retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9), the highest enlisted grade possible, and went to work at the U.S. Air Force Finance Center in Denver, CO. He worked there until his death on November 20, 2001. His sister, Gail, died two days later. Doug was an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. After Doug left Kenosha he never returned. Upon his death his body was cremated and his ashes scattered in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. No obituary was ever filed or Doug. The above information was obtained from his brother, William, who graciously consented to two phone interviews in November of 2012.
