St. Joe Uniforms 1962-1966

I hope any of you who attended St. Joe during the period appreciate the utility of not having to make fashion choices for four years. As I got older, my wife and I would go shopping for me and I always gravitated toward the powder blue cotton shirts, and black pants. I once went to an informal gathering at a friend's and wore a powder blue shirt, black slacks and black knit tie. They all asked why I dressed up. But, in 1962 everyone wore white athletic socks. The girls, with tennis shoes and the guys with giant shoes from Mullens called boarhides. The slacks had cuffs high enough to show off those socks. By 1964, some became smart enough to replace the boarhides with Beatle boots, also from Mullens. By the time we graduated, anyone daring enough to wear white socks was a fashion untouchable. No one wanted to go near you. The real rebels were the guys who would wear striped ties instead of the black knits. So it was black socks for the boys and nylon stockings for the girls. Actually, it was nice to see good Catholic girls being willing enough to show off their legs a little. But I always keep at least one powder blue shirt in my closet and I hope this does not make me a candidate for re-programming.
